Character Ink Private Tutoring Offerings

Over the past year since Ray has “semi retired” (lol), he has expanded our class offerings, added a Half-Day Homeschool option for local families, and taken on dozens of private tutoring students. It has been a busy year for Character Ink!

We will be continuing the private tutoring options as long as we have spaces available for the upcoming summer and next school year.

We have also had success this year with Ray doing private math tutoring via Skype or FaceTime and Donna teaching small writing classes via an online classroom. Both of these options will be available next year as requested.

We offer tutoring in the following subject areas, but
we are also available for homework help in content areas (study skills, test prep, note taking, time
management, etc.).

Use this service in the summer to catch up or get ahead in a subject area. Or to stay on-task during the academic year in areas that are harder for Mom or Dad to get around to. Let us know what would help you the most!

1) Writing–sentence, paragraph, report, essay, story writing; all levels; Directed Writing Approach
to get non-writers writing immediately! Taught by a writing curriculum author of over 100 books
totaling over 50,000 pages!

2) Math–from elementary through twelfth grade….your curriculum or one of our choice; remedial,
brush up, SAT prep, and more. Taught by a math professional (former CPA and CMA).

3) Reading–from first grade and up; phonics, reading comprehension, reaching reading fluency,
and more. Taught by curriculum author, elementary education degree and master’s work in
Reading Specialist.

4) Grammar/Usage–taught in conjunction with writing or alone; parts of speech; punctuation;
editing; spelling/structural analysis; and more. Taught by curriculum author and experienced
teacher of over 100 students each year in grammar and writing for over 20 years.

5) Science–elementary through high school–basic science, earth science, physics, biology,
advanced biology, chemistry; taught by experienced science teacher who has taught all of these
subjects to many small groups for over 15 years and is a math professional/former CPA.

Private Costs: Private tutoring for Ray and/or Donna is $30 for a 55 minute hour for once a week;
$25 for a 55 minute hour for students who come twice a week, and $20 / hour for three or more
hours per week.

Minimum number of scheduled sessions must be maintained in order to take a
teaching spot.

It’s mid-school year—that time when we re-evaluate the first semester and try to make changes that will help us meet our goals for our classroom, home, and family in the coming year. For many homeschoolers, meeting some of our academic (and music, arts, physical, etc.) goals will mean securing outside teachers and tutors.

This isn’t a bad thing! In my thirty-two years of homeschooling, I either hired or bartered for woodworking, quilting, sewing, violin, viola, flute, piano, voice, science, electronics, art, worldview, debate, and much more! It helped my kids develop skills in areas that I was not as skilled in (okay…some areas I had zero skills in!), and it lifted the load for me many times!

So in this video today, I describe some of the programming we offer in our Teaching Center in Fort Wayne through Character Ink (including some new offerings this year!) and how you can join mid-school-year if desired.

Blessings on your learning, loving, and growing in 2019!
Donna

By now, most of our local Character Ink friends have heard the news : We are starting a half-day homeschool in our home in six weeks (mid August 2018!). If you haven’t heard, you can see our original announcement here.)

So far, it has been such a joy to see the “exact clients” that we had in mind for our endeavor! They say the exact words that we felt would describe someone who wants this special service:

1) They love homeschooling—the lifestyle, the time with their kids, the home-centered approach to life that homeschooling offers, the relationships that are built through being with your kids way more waking hours than you are not (and knowing what is going on in their hearts through frequent interaction).

2) They value education—This can be said of most homeschoolers, but we are finding many parents who value education but felt that with their time constraints, work, and other commitments, they couldn’t give as much to their kids’ education as they feel is needed.

3) They are willing/able to spend a little extra on their kids’ education—They have the means for their kids to go to private school, but they want more control over their kids’ education—and they don’t want their kids to be gone 35 to 40 hours a week and don’t want to lose the home-centered approach to life that they have been enjoying through homeschooling.

4) They want the one-room schoolhouse feel that they offer at home–small teacher-student ratio that allows the teacher to know where his students are at all times in every subject.

5) They would like for someone else to keep track of everything academic—the teaching, the curriculum, the records, the grades, and yes, even the prodding some days!

We wanted to give some updates as Ray’s half-day homeschool takes shape with each enrollee. For example, we have found that high schoolers may or may not want to come every morning. Some of them don’t want the long drive. Others have jobs, etc. So Ray is altering the schedule for high schoolers who want to come longer some days and not at all other days.

While we have taught between 150 and 250 kids each semester for the past ten years in our four Cottage Class locations and have begun teaching dozens of kids online, this is new territory for us—being in charge of a student’s complete academic program and getting it all done by noon each day! 😊 (As Ray keeps saying with each plan, each book, each discussion—“Down memory lane again!” So many memories from our thirty-two years of teaching our seven kids at home! That has been so heart-warming.)

So we are tweaking, discussing things with our enrolling parents, and seeing what fits for each family. It is quite the journey—but a very exciting and rewarding one for sure!

This post is to give you some updates and let you see our registration information more fully. If you are near Fort Wayne, Indiana, and this concept appeals to you, Ray would love to chat with you and answer questions and explain our program more fully. Call him at 260-450-7063 or email him at characterink@gmail.com to set up a phone consult.

Please read on if you….

~Want your kids home with the family flexibility of homeschooling but are overwhelmed with all of the daily teaching, record keeping, grading, and prodding (smile…)

~Love the flexibility and freedom for afternoon homeschool activities but need to do other things (i.e. toddlers and preschoolers, work, caring for aging parents, home business, etc.) during the mornings

~Wish you could have all of the benefits of homeschooling without being the “bad guy” to make your students complete all of their work each day

~Desire to have someone who has homeschooled for 32 years and has taught/overseen subjects for over 2,000 students do the academics of homeschooling for you

~Want to have your students led, taught, and kept accountable by a wise, godly man who has already done this successfully with his own seven children

*High School Writing/Remediation—grades 7th-12th who have not written four paragraphs or more of all types of writing with quotes, persuasion, and more (Jump Start book)—Tuesdays 1:30-2:45 (This is also excellent preparation for jumping into CQLA or Meaningful Composition classes in the fall!) Writing Summer Cost: $10 per week for a minimum of four weeks each session (preferably all five weeks); plus $15 per each five week session for their book.

*You Choose! –I would love to add an online class or a different in-person class to my line up this summer—check out the MC books at the store to choose a book for your student or group, and I will plan around you! (Note that this year’s in-person writing classes by Donna will be High School Essay in the first semester and Four Research Reports second semester; Jump Start is a wonderful way to get your upper level high schoolers ready for these two classes. Or we could do a creative writing class this summer if I had enough interest!) Writing Summer Cost: $10 per week for a minimum of four weeks each session (preferably all five weeks); plus $15 per each five week session for their book.

Call or text today for more information or to sign up! Decisions as to which classes will run will be made by June 1st and will be based on class enrollment. Donna at 260-433-4365.

Composition/writing only are one semester classes.

If you are registering for CQLA after July 1st or you have questions about levels, please contact Ray at 260-450-7063. Returning CQLA students may be moving up to a new level. Please contact Donna (260-433-4365) for advice on CQLA and composition placement for returning students.

Please realize that our classes are heavily academic (i.e. not extra curricular or club- like). Please note sports and other class conflicts before registering.

CQLA students’ complete language arts homework requires 30 mins (for Level A), 45 mins (for Level B), and 60 mins (for Level C) of homework four days a week (non class days); other classes require 30 mins a day for homework. Suggested grades are given for all high school classes via grading sheets periodically throughout the semester.

Note: All CQLA and Meaningful Composition books have samples available at our blog: CQLA samples MC samples—  If you desire to see whether your student would fit in a certain level, you may want to consult the samples. You may also talk to Donna about your student’s level.

I have had a wonderful year teaching online classes! The tech wasn’t as bad as I was afraid it was going to be. We didn’t really have any trouble getting papers back and forth between me and the students. And it was great to teach students from Canada, Florida, Chicago, Ohio, and more! So much fun!

I am excited to open up a couple more classes–and extremely excited for the interest from co-ops and small groups to join me! I’m still working out the details of the small group or co-op classes, but I would love to talk you on the phone to work your group in! (260-433-4365)

2. Books–Check out the free samples of these books:

a. CQLA B

b. CQLA C

3. Semester Details

The semester will begin on the week of August 20th and run up to just before Christmas for a total of 17 weeks. Students will meet with me for sixty to ninety minutes a week (depending on class/number of students) online and will complete 45 minutes of homework per day on their non-class week days.

4. Students

This class is open to anyone in the age range and ability level listed in #1. The classes will be divided into Basic and Extension, so younger students (or those with less writing experience) will have fewer assignments and fewer paragraphs/expectations than older or more experienced students.

5. Student Expectations

Students will be expected to attend class every week unless arrangements are made ahead of time for the student to watch the recording. (Parents should discuss this with me when enrolling; we want the class to be live so watching recordings will be a last option for necessary misses only.) Students will be expected to complete the homework assignments each week and scan/email their papers to me for editing.

6. Parent Expectations

Parents should watch the Create and Write From a Sentence-by-Sentence Outline and How to Complete the Checklist Challenge videos (you will be given access to the videos and documents upon enrolling in the class) so that they can grade their student’s outlines and Checklist Challenges. The only grading that will be done by the instructor for this class is editing of rough draft papers (before or after the Checklist Challenge is done but before the final copy is created). These videos are under 90 minutes total and will be available as part of the class for the first four weeks of the class. Final grades will not be given, but parents may use the edits and grades from the student’s papers for overall grading purposes, as needed. (See edited papers here for examples of what student edits look like from me.) CQLA parents may want to take grades on spelling tests, Think Fast Quizzes, Editor Duty assignments, and grammar assignments, etc., in CQLA. We will grade these together in class, and you can get your students’ scores from their books after we grade/review them.

7. Materials

You will be emailed a PDF of the book and will be expected to print this book and three-hole punch it for your student. Each student needs their own book in a three-ring binder. Additionally, students will need a medium set of highlighters (more than four colors), sticky notes, and a thesaurus (or online thesaurus).

8. Cost

A. Writing Only Classes—The class fee is $10 per week, $15 PDF fee (for your student use only), and $10 semester charge for our printing and outside editor per student. That is a total of $185. This is payable in three payments: $85 on or before the first class; $50 October 1st; $50 November 1st. You may mail checks or pay via PayPal at characterinklady@gmail.com PayPal address.

B. Complete Language Arts—CQLA—The class fee is $15 per week, $5 per month PDF fee (for your student use only), and $10 semester charge for our printing and outside editor per student. You have two payment options:

1) Pay in full for semester–$15/week x 17 weeks ($255); plus $20 PDF fee for semester; plus $10 copy fees per semester=$285 paid in full

2) Pay $85 on or before first class; $50 per month first of September, October, November, and December.

9. Class Size

We will need at least five people in each class in order to run each one with my assistant and outside editor help. We will limit the class to ten people total (unless co-ops or small groups use the videos separately–see below).. If you have a small group of students who want to do the class together, please call me right away to make these arrangements (260-433-4365).

10. Video Needs

Your student will need to be able to be on a device or computer (preferably not a phone) on the app called Zoom. I will teach there live and will have screen sharing capabilities should I need to show any part of my book to students. This app is free for attendees.

11. Registration

To register, email me at characterinklady@gmail.com with your student’s name, grade, address, email that you check frequently, and two phone numbers, if possible. Please also include parents’ names, any info you want me to know, and which number may be used for texting. Call with questions: (260-433-4365).

12. Co-Ops and Small Groups

If your small group or co-op would like to watch the videos and do the class together (when you meet), we can make special arrangements for this to happen (for the classes listed). For WRITING ONLY classes, there will be two prices for this option, based on whether you will be doing all of the editing yourself (as their teacher or co-op moderator) or whether you want each paper to be edited one time by Character Ink. (See edited papers here to decide on which track you would like.) Contact Donna personally to sign up for this option: 260-433-4365.

I know that title is a lot cheerier than most people are when they think of Summer School. However, I want to help you look at Summer School in a little more positive light. It CAN be an opportunity to catch up on missed skills, reinforce what was just learned, or prep for the upcoming school year. It CAN be an opportunity to focus on one area of academics instead of several. It CAN be an opportunity to grow your student in an area of interest. It CAN be a great opportunity!

My teaching load is way lessened in the summer (especially this summer since I am also starting to teach Intermittent Fasting online!), but I still have a day or two in which I offer remediation classes and private tutoring. (They are never called remediation classes outside of the sign up!)

Additionally, Ray is offering a few private slots middle school/high school math and science areas. For example, he is adding one student starting in April who is behind on chemistry and wants to finish the course strong before starting school in the fall (i.e. not carrying it over). He also has some SAT/ACT math prep students in the spring and summer. His degree is in accounting. (He was a CPA before he went into a plant setting and got involved in production and materials.) However, his real “claim to fame” in teaching has been teaching speech, debate, economics, biology, chemistry, physics, and 5th-12th grade math to our own kids as well as hundreds of kids in our cottage classes.

So…..if you are considering summer school and want a little help, we’d love to help you! We are offering two 5-week sessions—students can do one or both with one non-paid miss per session (due to vacations and busy-ness of summer).

Here is what I am offering so far and what times Ray has available for private kids. Please note that if I have three or more students interested, I can add an online class or face-to-face class to my schedule pretty easily, so check out my Meaningful Composition samples if you are considering a quick summer writing class for your students!

TWO SUMMER SESSIONS

First Session: Tuesday, June 5, 12, 19, 26, and July 3

Second Session: Tuesday, July 10, 17, 24, 31, and August 7

Ray’s Availability: Any week day or week night in SW Fort Wayne; some Bluffton/Ossian openings; Saturday mornings in SW FW

Donna’s Private Availability: Monday morning; Tuesday all day and all evening; some Thursday openings

Private Costs: Private tutoring for Ray and/or Donna is $30 for a 55 minute hour for once a week; $25 for a 55 minute hour for students who come twice a week (or one session with Donna and one with Ray). Students may miss one out of every session during the summer sessions without penalty. More than one miss per session requires a make up session or a payment. (These are summer guidelines only.) We always prefer to make up sessions whenever possible.

Donna’s Online or Face-to-Face Summer Classes—Tuesdays—(Minimum student count must be met)

  • Complete Language Arts remediation for 4th-8th grade students who have not written three or more paragraph reports and essays—Tuesdays 12:00 SW Fort Wayne (We will use CQLA Level A for this class; one month samples are available at the store.) CQLA Summer Cost: $15 per week for a minimum of four weeks each session (preferably all five weeks); plus $10 per each five week session for their book.

  • High School Writing/Remediation—grades 7th-12th who have not written four paragraphs or more of all types of writing with quotes, persuasion, and more (Jump Start book)—Tuesdays 1:30-2:45 (This is also excellent preparation for jumping into CQLA or Meaningful Composition classes in the fall!) Writing Summer Cost: $10 per week for a minimum of four weeks each session (preferably all five weeks); plus $15 per each five week session for their book.

  • You Choose! –I would love to add an online class or a different in person class to my line up this summer—check out the MC books at the store to choose a book for your student or group, and I will plan around you!

Decisions as to which classes will run will be made by May 15th and will be based on class enrollment. Donna at 260-433-4365.
