It has recently come to my attention that newer readers are not aware of the dozens of free audios and videos that I have at the Character Ink blog! One reader recently told me that she cleaned her entire basement for a weekend while listening to podcasts and videos after she discovered them! So I thought I would re-introduce some of them in the coming months—along with other related posts and products. So let’s start with Story Time—one of my favorite times of the day for twenty-five years! If you have always longed to do a story time in your school day, but you haven’t figured out how to work it with several children, different ages and tastes, busy schedules, etc., this post is the one for you!

Story time (along with having spent every day with my kids for over thirty years) is one of my best accomplishments in life. Seriously. Do you know the dedication and persistence it takes to read aloud to kids for two hours (at least) nearly every day for three decades? But I made it! And I have well-educated, book-loving children and warm memories to prove it! 🙂

First, the podcast! This was one of my very first podcasts, so bear with me as I was learning the tech (and trying to keep it under time limits!).

Podcast: Story Time Questions

Secondly, for those who are not listeners but would rather read tips and tricks, here’s a blog post I wrote answering common story time questions:

Part 1: Story Time Q&A--General Story Time Tips

Third, I have a Q and A post based on a young momma’s questions about story time with very young children. It can be done! And once you start, your kids will love it so much you will wonder why you didn’t work harder on making it happen earlier!

Lastly, I have four readers that you and your children might enjoy. Three of them are beginning readers with children’s text on one page and parent text on the other. The perfect reward trio for when your child reads the children’s part to you—then Mom or Dad reads the “older text” to the child! The fourth reader is a beginning chapter book. All four are about the loveable characters from The Jungle Book.

Love and hope,

P.S. What are your read aloud struggles? How can I help you incorporate this amazing time in your school days?

December Podcast Schedule Change

Dear podcast listeners and friends of Raising Kids With Character,

I will be unable to do the full five weeks of podcast episodes in December due to an illness that has put my dad in the hospital for at least ten days and maybe up to two weeks, including: surgery. I thought I could get it all done, working in the hospital in between talking with doctors, nurses, physical therapists, etc., until my computer died at the hospital yesterday.

So I will be working on my phone for at least a week – still from my dad’s hospital room quite often. Thank you for your patience and understanding and for sharing the meme that shows what the remaining podcast episodes will be for the rest of December. Also, please keep watching for the Christmas With College and Adult Children blog posts. I have some fun ones coming in the next week!

Love and hope,

Donna

P.S. You sure you are subscribed to our newsletter and/or the blog, so that you will get the freebie Friday newsletter! This Friday we will have an annotated Christmas book list with my rankings of them. You won’t want to miss it!

Podcast: Character Training With Routine Behaviors (The Consequence Pie) Donna Reish, of Raising Kids With Character parenting seminar, Character Ink Press, and Language Lady, brings you another episode of Wondering Wednesday podcast about tweens (though it certainly can apply to elementary kids and teens too!). In the following up to her Four D’s of Behavior and Dealing With Heart Issues of Tweens, Donna explains the difference between Four D’s discipline and Character Training/Routine Behaviors consequences. She then gives a systematic order to be sure that you, as the parent, are doing all that you can to help your child succeed in whatever areas you are having problems (not finishing work, unclean room, dilly dallying, etc.). She explains Kevin Leman’s Reality Discipline and teaches how to apply this to character/routine behaviors. Finally, she gives some solutions to these behaviors, including RKWC Consequence Pies in which the child helps choose the consequences and these consequences are carried out in a black and white (no gray area!) manner that the child knows is coming.

Podcast: Dealing With Heart Issues of TweensDonna Reish, of Raising Kids With Character, Homeschooling With Character, and Character Ink publishing, answers questions readers have been posing about handling 4 D types of behaviors (heart behaviors) in children ages eight to fourteen or so (primarily tweens). Donna emphasizes the need for parents to take responsibility for their parenting mistakes first. Then focus on taking the behaviors from gray to black & white so that misbehaviors are clear and can be handled. She gives an important order/protocol to make things very black and white with this age group for three typical misbehaviors, disrespect, disobedience, and fighting. Additionally, she gives suggested signaling words and phrases to use when these behaviors come up so that things are crystal clear as to the family expectations and handling of these things.
