{"id":855,"date":"2011-01-11T23:30:00","date_gmt":"2011-01-11T23:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/characterinkblog.com\/day-11-more-about-roots-and-comprehension-building\/"},"modified":"2015-09-18T11:55:39","modified_gmt":"2015-09-18T15:55:39","slug":"day-11-more-about-roots-and-comprehension-building","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/characterinkblog.com\/day-11-more-about-roots-and-comprehension-building\/","title":{"rendered":"day 11: more about roots and comprehension building"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">Whether you are trying to expand your vocabulary and build your comprehension of higher levels of reading material or you are trying to help your children or students to do so, the same approach may be taken:<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><\/div>\n<ol style=\"margin-top: 0in;\" type=\"1\">\n<li style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: list .5in;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">Learn all you can about roots and affixes (prefixes and suffixes)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: list .5in;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">Read a lot so you encounter the words you want to learn over and over<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">The real question isn\u2019t whether those two methods work. The real question is whether one should come before the other. And for that, there isn\u2019t one good answer.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">It\u2019s sort of like using a dictionary to learn how to spell a word. If you can\u2019t spell the word, how can you find it in the dictionary to learn how to spell it? (Or so my kids always ask me!)<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">The same is true of vocabulary building. Reading levels that are above your comprehension level cannot help you if you have no clues to the unknown words.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">And studying roots and affixes will not be much help to you if you have not encountered those roots and affixes often enough for that learning to carry over into your reading.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">So what should a parent or teacher do to help a child increase his vocabulary? Glad you asked! And I will share my humble opinion tomorrow&#8212;the word count police are looking over my shoulder today! <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Wingdings; mso-ascii-font-family: Arial; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial;
