Of course, raising seven kids (and having kids \u201cat home\u201d for 35 years!), we have a lot of \u201creal life\u201d examples of everything we teach. And this topic is no exception with our rather humorous (but true life!) story of how our \u201clittle boys\u201d came up with the \u201cTen Second Rule for Food on the Ceiling\u201d!<\/p>\n If you find yourself barking orders to kids for every move they make\u2014and you\u2019re not really feeling like you are getting to the important stuff\u2014you might be right. Pizza crust on ceiling \n \n <\/p>\n 1. We tend to treat all behaviors equally– But are they?<\/p>\n a. Detrimental because kids think everything is the same! 2. Childish behaviors<\/p>\n a. Excited children 3. 4 D Behaviors Disobedience (4 D\u2019s Video 1 and 2: https:\/\/characterinkblog.com\/video-the-four-ds-of-behavior-poster-pack\/\\<\/a>)<\/p>\n a. Disobedience<\/p>\n i. Direct disobedience (as opposed to forgetting or skipping something) b. Disrespect<\/p>\n i. Disrespectful words, attitudes, and responses c. Deceit<\/p>\n i. Any dishonesty, stealing d. Destruction (purposeful destruction)<\/p>\n i. Not accidents <\/p>\n <\/p>\n 1. Don\u2019t say no unless you\u2019ll go https:\/\/characterinkblog.com\/dont-say-no-unless-youll-go\/<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n a. Stop saying something if you will not follow through on it (especially with toddlers and preschoolers) 2. Use character training\/consequences for routine behaviors\u2014don\u2019t \u201cground them forever for not doing dishes\u201d—that should be used for 4 D\u2019s<\/p>\n a. Kids will know what to expect 6. Stop making big deals out of little deals! b. If you\u2019re not moving from your chair, it\u2019s not important enough to call it out<\/p>\n
b. Routine misbehaviors like not following through, not staying on schedule, not doing the chore chart, forgetting, etc., should be handled with training and consequences<\/p>\n
