In my language arts series for grades two through twelve, I have a weekly lesson called “Wacky Words.” (Yeah, I’m all about alliteration. Um, Language Lady??!!) Anyway, the title fits a little better than calling them homophone lessons because not all confusing word are true homophones. Some are just, well, confusing–and wacky!<\/span><\/p>\n Here are some tricks and tips I have used recently in a Wacky Word lesson. Maybe some of these will help you remember which<\/b><\/u> word is which<\/b><\/u> <\/b>(not witch!). Smile… <\/span><\/p>\n 1. Hear<\/b>\u2014There is an ear<\/b><\/u> in hear<\/b><\/u>. 2. Here<\/b>\u2014There is not an ear in here<\/b><\/u>.
3. There<\/b>\u2014It is here and there. There<\/b><\/u> is a here<\/b><\/u> in there<\/b><\/u>!
4. Their<\/b>\u2014The word heir<\/b><\/u>, which can mean ownership, is in the word their<\/b><\/u>, and their is a <\/span>pronoun that shows ownership!
5. See<\/b>\u2014Do you see two eyes in the word see<\/b><\/u> ?
6. Boar<\/b>–Boa<\/b><\/u>r has an a<\/b><\/u> and is an animal.
7. Then<\/b>—The<\/b><\/u>n h<\/span>as an e<\/b><\/u> and means ne<\/b><\/u>xt. According to one of my students (Isaac!), then<\/b><\/u> means when<\/b><\/u>. <\/span><\/span>
8. Isle<\/b>— Is<\/b><\/u>le is like the word is<\/b><\/u>land.
9. Chord<\/b>—Ch<\/b><\/u>ord h<\/span>as an h<\/b><\/u> like chor<\/b><\/u>us (both musical).
10. Compliment<\/b>—Compliment h<\/span>as an i–I <\/b><\/u>like compli<\/b><\/u>ments.
11. Sensor<\/b>—Sens<\/span><\/b><\/u>or r<\/span>elates to the sens<\/b><\/u>es.
12. Herd<\/b>\u2014H<\/span>erd<\/b><\/u> of deer<\/b><\/u>\u2014almost the same letters in a different order!
13. Heard<\/b>\u2014Hear<\/b><\/u>d has the word ear<\/b><\/u> in it
14. Through<\/b>—It is rough<\/b><\/u> when you go through<\/b><\/u> hard times
15. Threw<\/b>\u2014 He threw<\/b><\/u> a new<\/b><\/u> scr<\/span>ew<\/b><\/u>.
16. Pair<\/b>\u2014Love is in the air<\/b><\/u> for this loving pair<\/b><\/u>.
17. Pare<\/b>\u2014After he caught it, he was gong to pare<\/b><\/u> the hare<\/b><\/u>.
18. Pear<\/b>\u2014A pear<\/b><\/u> half looks like an ear\u2014and has the word ear<\/b><\/u> in it.
19. Desert<\/b>\u2014has one s<\/b><\/u> and you only want to be stuck in the desert one time!<\/b><\/u>
20. Dessert<\/b>\u2014has two s\u2019<\/b><\/u>\u2014and you want two desserts<\/b><\/u>!
21. Main<\/b>\u2014The main<\/b><\/u> (for first) murderer was Cain<\/b><\/u>\u2014both spelled ain.
22. Mane<\/b>\u2014The lion has a mane<\/b><\/u> and is not tame<\/b><\/u>!
23. Its<\/b>\u2014pronoun that shows ownership\u2014never use an apostrophe to show ownership to a pronoun; <\/b><\/u>that makes a contraction.<\/b>
24. It\u2019s<\/b>\u2014always say the two words uncontracted—if you say it is<\/b><\/u> when you see this word, you will never use it\u2019s for possession\u2014the dog lost it\u2019s (it is!?) collar\u2014WRONG.<\/b><\/u>
25. Sense<\/b>\u2014 He was tense<\/b><\/u>, so he lost his sense<\/b><\/u>.
26. Cents<\/b>\u2014There are one hundred<\/b> cents<\/b><\/u> in a dollar and one hundred years<\/b> in a cent<\/b><\/u>ury.
27. Since<\/b>\u2014 Since<\/b><\/u> the prince<\/b><\/u> was tense he began to wince.<\/b><\/u>
28. Presence<\/b>\u2014 Can you think of a trick?
29. Present<\/b>\u2014have you ever heard the saying that \u201cthe present<\/b><\/u> is a true present<\/b><\/u>\u201d?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
