Morning reading\u2014for us, this is like our \u201cschool devotional extended.\u201d We have this morning reading time after morning routines and morning chores\u2014three or four days a week (\u201cmore often than not\u201d). Because it is devotional and school, I like to do a variety of things:<\/span>
<\/span><\/p>\n

1. Character reading\u2014this usually involves Bible too (see below for Character Sketches)<\/span>

<\/span>
2. Chapter books\u2014we are going through a series of American history biographies\u2014we have done biographies in morning reading for twenty-five years!!!<\/span>

<\/span>
3. Creation science\u2014we always read from Answers in Genesis and other materials together<\/span>

<\/span>
4. Bible or Bible stories (depending on ages, etc.)<\/span>

<\/span>
5. Poetry\u2014we added this two years ago, and I love it!<\/span>

<\/span>
6. Nature devotional\u2014been doing these for years and years<\/span>

<\/span>
7. Literature excerpts\u2014I assign whole books to the boys (one chapter book per week unless they are lengthy, in which case, they may read the same book over a two week period), but I like doing excerpts and shortened ones with them aloud<\/span>

<\/span>
8. Character stories\u2014we have done a variety of these\u2014right now we are doing one my one of my favorite Christmas story authors (Wheeler, see below)<\/span>

<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span>Below are the current titles we are using, along with their authors and links. The books listed are ones I do now with my boys, ages 11, 15, and 17. I am capitalizing the titles because I cannot get the FB blog to underline or italicize consistently\u2014not trying to \u201cyell\u201d at you! \uf04a<\/span>

1. Character studies\u2014reading about godly character of Bible people and how character qualities are shown in the lives of animals\u2014CHARACTER SKETCHES, Volume III\u2014published by Institute in Basic Life Principles (one semester book) https:\/\/tfths.com\/character.php<\/span>

2. Short literature excerpts, an outstanding way to introduce classic literature to kids ages eight to fourteen (or even older\u2014Jonathan and I love them!)\u2014CLASSICS TO READ ALOUD TO YOUR CHILDREN\u2014compiled by William F. 3. Nature devotional\u2014IN HIS HANDS\u2014A NATURE DEVOTIONAL-\u2014by James and Priscilla Tucker (year long book)\u2014out of print\u2014if your kids like animals, nature, and trivia, I recommend you try to get this book used!<\/span>

4. Bible \u201cstory\u201d book for older students and adults (followed by listening to the portion covered in here on audio cd from the regular Bible)\u2014THE STORY OF STORIES\u2014THE BIBLE IN NARRATIVE FORM \u2013by Karen C.
